In August 2023 Kirstie drove from Tasmania (with the help of the ferry – Spirit of Tasmania) to Marree in the north east of South Australia. The goal was to fly over Lake Eyre – Kati Thanda. The twelve day, 3000+km drive afforded a number of opportunities for photography. What a glorious trip it was.

In the mallee country of South Australia.

I drove past the Flinders Ranges. I would have loved to have driven through them, but I was on a schedule to see Lake Eyre (Kati Thanda).

I arrived at Marree in time for the annual Camel Cup races. The town was packed. Lucky I booked my accommodation ahead of time.

The colours of the lake were dark and moody. The expanse of water was unbelievable. We flew over it for four hours. Water, water everywhere.

I didn’t get to drive to the edge of the lake as a significant rain event two weeks previously still had roads closed to 2WD vehicles – which was me.

Time to head home again.

These ruins were not an uncommon sight in the desert country of SA. I wonder who lived in these old places?

I stopped to have a chat to the owners of “Comfortably Numb”. Yes, they are Pink Floyd fans.

Emus were a not uncommon sight in the saltbush country. This group of seven juveniles was as curious about me as I was of them. It was very windy. Their feathers were blowing around with the gusts.

Last time I visited Pink Lake, there were salt crystals everywhere – both in and out of the water. The recent rains had not only raised the level of the lake, it had dissolved all the salt!
